Formative Assessment

“Formative assessment is a process used by teachers and students during instruction that provides feedback to adjust ongoing teaching and learning to improve studentsā€™ achievement of intended instructional outcomes.”

This definition was originally developed by theĀ Formative Assessment for Students and Teachers (FAST) State Collaborative on Assessment and Student Standards (SCASS), a CCSSO workgroup. The FAST SCASS group devised the definition based on current literature and research around which teaching practices have the largest effect on student learning.
